Lack of snow forces Ely to cancel Fire and Ice show

ELY -- A lack is snow is forcing the cancellation of the annual White Pine Fire and Ice show at Cave Lake State Park south of Ely.

The event that features fireworks and snow sculptures began seven years ago and attendance has grown as hardy souls brave normally cold and snowy January weather to partake in the festivities held on a frozen lake.

Held over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend, the show has also been named to the American Bus Association's list of top 100 events in North America.

While the "fire" aspect is easily achieved, it's hard to make sculptures without snow.

And Ely, like much of Nevada this year, so far has been left high and dry by Mother Nature.
