LAP 171: BURTON LEADS AS 10TH YELLOW FLAG COMES OUT
March 1, 2009 - 4:03 pm
Aric Almirola spins like a broken roulette wheel on lap 144 to bring out the eighth caution of the day. That’s good for me because I’ve been drinking too much coffee.
Let’s hope they don’t match the total of 12 in yesterday’s Sam’s Town 300 or last year’s 13 in the Cup race.
I’m watching Carroll Shelby doing an interview on TV now.
Just thinking, the sponsor for this race is Shelby who makes musclecars on steroids a few hundred yards west of turn 1. I guess if you can afford one of those awesome Shelby Mustangs with about 700 horsepower you don’t have to worry about the price of gas and you obviously aren’t a reporter.
Back to green on lap 149. Johnson leads, followed by Gordon, Biffle, Stewart and Kyle. Kurt has fallen to 26th with mechanical issues.
After 162 laps: Gordon leads Johnson by 0.5 seconds; Biffle third, Stewart fourth and Kyle fifth. Earnhardt cracks the top 10.
Gordon has now led more than 20,000 laps in his Cup career.
Kurt nursing a sick Dodge and is 26th.
On lap 163, Michael Waltrip backs into the wall in turn 4 to bring out the ninth caution. Waltrip would sponsor NAPA's best customer if they sold body parts. Sorry, Mikey. He gets back onto track after quick stop at his pit.
All the leaders head to pit road under yellow on Lap 165.
Kurt stays on track to earn 5 bonus points for leading a lap.
When it goes green on lap 169, the leader is Burton, followed by Bobby Labonte, Vickers, Truex, Biffle, Jeff Gordon, Johnson, Kyle, Stewart, Edwards and Harvick.
More yellow on 171, and again in turn 4. That's No. 10
This time it's Denny Hamlin.
