Las Vegas city manager position filled
Las Vegas got a new city manager Wednesday, and the City Council named a park in honor of Doug Selby, the person who is leaving that post.
Betsy Fretwell, who has been a deputy city manager since 2002 and joined the city in 2000, was sworn in after a unanimous council vote.
Because the vote took place during the ceremonial part of the meeting, it was a little unusual. Council members were standing in front of the dais and took a voice vote instead of recording their votes using buttons on their desks.
"All in favor, please say, 'Aye,' " Mayor Oscar Goodman said.
"Aye," said council members, along with a few audience members.
"No," added a smiling Mayor Pro Tem Gary Reese. "Just kidding."
Fretwell's appointment began at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
She will be paid an annual salary of $180,000. Selby's annual pay was $205,292.
Selby spent six years in the city manager chair and has said he's stepping down to pursue other career interests.
Later in Wednesday's meeting, council members voted to name a park and trailhead after Selby. The nine-acre park is planned for the corner of Sandhill Road and Owens Avenue, next to the Las Vegas Wash.
"These words -- I wish I could underline them as we speak," Goodman said. "He has been instrumental in creating the world class city we have today.
"Doug has left his footprint here. I don't know that anyone will be able to fill it."
