Las Vegas punch line for Meyers was a hit

Seth Meyers, "Saturday Night Live" star, came away from a 2001 trip to Las Vegas armed with new material after a punch in the mouth.

Meyers shared the story Saturday during his Las Vegas debut at The Mirage.

Meyers, who anchors SNL's "Weekend Update," said he was at a nightclub and went to get a drink. He was trying to "scootch" between two guys standing at a bar, when he bumped a patron, who took umbrage.

Meyers gave The Mirage audience a hilarious account of how he tried to defuse the situation with some witticisms. But the guy wasn't impressed with the humor of SNL's future head writer and popped him.

During a meet-and-greet session after Saturday's show, Meyers told me the smackdown happened on a football trip with some Northwestern University buddies in town for the Wildcats' game with UNLV.

His Las Vegas comedy debut was such a big hit that Felix Rappaport, president of The Mirage, made it clear in front of a backstage crowd that he wanted Meyers back.

Meyers sounded like he was all for it.

EDC FILM CANCELED

If you wanted to see the "Electric Daisy Carnival Experience" on Thursday, figure on flying or driving to Los Angeles.

Of the 500-plus theaters that were to show the documentary nationwide, only 86 were still committed. Four Las Vegas theaters that had signed up were removed from EDC's website on Tuesday.

The cancellations came after a near-riot erupted Wednesday outside the Hollywood premiere, where DJ Kaskade was performing a concert for electronic dance music fans.

He had urged his Twitter followers to show up as a flash mob.

Erika Raney, director of Insomniac Inc., the owners of the EDC, told me via email Tuesday that there is "significant interest" from private and club venues in the L.A. area to screen the film. Similar options are being explored elsewhere across the country, she said.

THE SCENE AND HEARD

DJ Sam Ronson faces DUI charges after being picked up for speeding Sunday near Baker, Calif., 90 miles southwest of Las Vegas. Lindsay Lohan's ex was picked up about 10 a.m. in her black Porsche. Ronson, 33, was seen partying at The Bank (Bellagio) Sunday at a bachelor party for her brother, British DJ and music producer Mark Ronson. She's got such a smirk on her face in the jail mug shot that DListed.com referred to it as a "smugshot."

Former UNLV standout Shawn Marion of the Dallas Mavericks has turned down an invitation to appear on "Dancing With the Stars," according to TMZ.com. Would have been a scheduling conflict if the NBA lockout ended.

Mike Tyson is signing autographs and doing photo ops from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Field of Dreams at the Forum Shops at Caesars.

SIGHTINGS

Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh, promoting his book "Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion and Purpose" on "The Colbert Report" with host Stephen Colbert on Monday night. Sam and Mark Ronson, at Lavo (Palazzo) on Sunday, where she was DJ-ing.
