Low turnout expected in Ward 2 City Council race
Voters in southwest Las Vegas have one more chance to have a say on who fills the Ward 2 City Council seat vacated by Steve Wolfson, who resigned to become Clark County's district attorney.
Whether very many will take advantage of the opportunity remains to be seen.
Only 1,840 out of about 43,000 eligible voters cast ballots during early voting, with about another 750 voting by mail.
It would take about another 2,000 voters showing up at the polls today to top 10 percent turnout.
"It doesn't look like it is going to be very good based on what we saw the first two days," said Clark County Registrar of Voters Larry Lomax of the expected turnout.
It won't be for lack of trying by the candidates.
Presumed front-runners Bob Beers, a conservative former state legislator, and Ric Truesdell, a city planning commissioner, have been bombarding the ward with mailers and phone calls in an attempt to drive their supporters to the polls.
Public Defender Kristine Kuzemka, retired Metropolitan Police Department Capt. Bob Chinn, investor Fayyaz Raja and Anthony Ruggiero, an assistant to Mayor Pro Tem Stavros Anthony, also have spent thousands of dollars courting voters with mail, yard and billboard signs.
Teacher Sherese Holmes, nurse Roberta Boyers and attorney and former certified public accountant Bruce Gale also are running.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the following locations: Veterans Memorial Leisure Center, 101 N. Pavilion Center Drive; Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.; and Vons, Boca Park, 820 S. Rampart Blvd.
Only registered voters in Las Vegas Ward 2 are eligible to vote in the election.
The winner will serve the remainder of Wolfson's term, which expires in June 2013.
The annual salary for the job is $72,742.
