LV man killed when pickup rear-ends semi

A 43-year-old Las Vegas man died Tuesday afternoon after his pickup rear-ended a semi-truck that was stopped at a red light, Las Vegas police said.

The accident happened about 3:52 p.m. near Cheyenne Avenue and Rancho Drive. The man who died at the scene was not identified. He was driving a 2000 Chevrolet S-10, police said.

Las Vegas police Sgt. Oscar Chavez said the driver of the pickup was directly behind the semi-truck. The vehicles were heading west on Cheyenne when the pickup hit the semi-truck. The collision forced the front end of the pickup under the trailer of the big rig. Las Vegan Benjamin Joyce, 50, was identified by police as the driver of the semi-truck. He was unharmed.

Chavez said he did not know whether alcohol or drugs played a part in the accident.

Westbound Cheyenne near Michael Way was closed for several hours because of the collision.
