Man, 31, gets 10 years to life in attack
A 31-year-old man accused of kidnapping and raping a 13-year-old Henderson girl was sentenced to 10 years to life in prison Wednesday.
In November, Sergio Hugo Hernandez pleaded guilty to battery with intent to commit sexual assault and lewdness with a child. In exchange, prosecutors dropped the more serious charges against him, including first-degree sexual assault and kidnapping. Hernandez, who was in the country illegally, will be deported when he completes his sentence.
The victim told police she was on her way home from school when she was kidnapped and choked into unconsciousness.
During the sentencing before District Judge Stewart Bell, prosecutor Lisa Luzaich said the girl is "completely traumatized" by the attack and takes knives to bed with her at night.
The victim's father, who spoke in court, called the incident a "despicable act."
Hernandez's attorney, Dan Bunin, said that Hernandez didn't know what he was doing because he was high on methamphetamine at the time.
