Man accused of killing, raping toddler appears in court

The man accused of killing a toddler and leaving her body in a trash bin appeared briefly in a Las Vegas courtroom this morning, where he faced murder and sexual assault charges.

William Marshall, who was extradited from Phoenix over the weekend, told a Las Vegas justice of the peace that he understood the charges against him.

Authorities said he killed 21-month-old Shia Travis and sexually assaulted her.

Shia's body was found in a trash bin at the La Mesa Apartments at 560 Vista Ave. near Swenson Street by several homeless people. She was dubbed "Baby Jane Vista Doe" before her identity was known.

Marshall is being held without bail.
