Man arrested in slaying of ex-girlfriend
A 20-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after witnesses placed him near the apartment of his 17-year-old ex-girlfriend shortly before she died from gunshot wounds, Las Vegas police said.
Police also accused Omar Rodriguez of attempting to kill a man in November who was the new boyfriend of the girl.
Police arrested Rodriguez on charges of murder with a deadly weapon in the death of the girl, and attempted murder with a deadly weapon and battery with substantial bodily harm in connection with the stabbing of the new boyfriend.
Sgt. Rocky Alby, with Las Vegas police's homicide section, said it was clear Rodriguez had a difficult time accepting that he was no longer in a relationship with the girl.
"At one time this is a boyfriend-girlfriend situation," Alby said. "He had a tough time leaving her alone."
Alby would not release the name of the girl, who died from gunshot wounds to the head at an apartment complex near Sahara Avenue and Maryland Parkway, because she was a minor.
Another girl called 911 about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday and said the 17-year-old was bleeding from her head, police said. Alby said the 911 caller was a roommate of the girl who shared the apartment with the her and three other people. He added that the 17-year-old died at the Royal Sahara Apartments shortly after medical personnel arrived at the scene.
Police tracked down Rodriguez about 4 p.m. Wednesday in northeast Las Vegas.
