Man arrested in slaying of roommate
April 8, 2008 - 9:00 pm
A 31-year-old man who police say was angry that his roommate was having an affair with his girlfriend was arrested Sunday morning on a murder charge.
Police say Juan Apariciaparra fought with and fatally stabbed the roommate, whose name was not released, after walking in on a sexual encounter.
Police said Apariciaparra then turned a box cutter on his own neck and attempted suicide. The girlfriend was not injured.
Officers first noticed Apariciaparra holding a jacket up to his neck as he walked near the intersection of Fredrika Drive and Palo Verde Street, near Flamingo and Paradise roads, at 4:42 a.m. Sunday.
Apariciaparra told the officers he had just killed his girlfriend and started to run, police said. When officers tried to detain him, Apariciaparra took out a box cutter and tried to cut his own throat, police said.
Officers struggled with him, eventually getting control of him with the help of a Taser. One of the officers was cut by the weapon in the scuffle. The officer was treated for the injury and released, police said.
Apariciaparra was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center where he remained on Monday.
Meanwhile, officers checked Apariciaparra's apartment in a nearby residence and found his roommate dead.
Apariciaparra was booked into the Clark County Detention Center in absentia on one count each of murder with a deadly weapon, battery on a police officer with a deadly weapon, and resisting arrest with a deadly weapon.
