Man convicted in 2006 slaying

A man accused of killing three people during a 2006 Las Vegas crime spree was convicted of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon and other charges Monday.

A jury convicted Eugene Nunnery, 29, of killing a drug dealer during a dispute in August 2006. The jury also convicted him of assault with a deadly weapon for trying to kill a 14-year-old pregnant witness and attempted murder with a deadly weapon for shooting a bystander.

Raphael Alfred, 24, was killed in the shooting. Prosecutors said Nunnery shot Alfred in front of a house near Industrial Road and Sahara Avenue because the victim had short-changed him in a $50 marijuana deal.

The jury deliberated about five hours before convicting Nunnery. Jurors are scheduled to resume hearing the penalty phase of the case today. They could sentence him to death.

Authorities said Nunnery and several co-defendants went on a crime spree in 2006 that targeted day laborers and others in a series of robberies.

A jury last year convicted Nunnery of first-degree murder for killing Saul Nunez Suastegui execution-style in a robbery that netted him $3 in September 2006.

The jury in that case sentenced him to death.

Nunnery is scheduled to go to trial in September for a third murder. He also faces the death penalty in that case.
