Man found dead after standoff with police

One man was found dead Sunday night in what police are calling a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a domestic dispute turned into a police standoff in the 6300 block of Hobart Avenue, near Jones Boulevard and Washington Avenue.

Las Vegas police were called to the residence at 7:36 p.m. by a woman who reported she was involved in a domestic dispute with her husband.

She said there were guns inside the home but said she wasn't sure whether her husband was inside.

Police said they tried to make contact with a male subject. They entered the home, the man fired a gun and an officer fired his weapon as well, police said.

Officers retreated outside the home and formed a perimeter with SWAT officers and negotiators for several hours.

When authorities later entered the home, they found the man dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Police said the man also had a gunshot wound to the leg.

Police said a rifle and a handgun were lying next to the man, whom they did not identify.

The officer who fired his weapon was placed on paid administrative leave, following Police Department policy. His name will not be released until 48 hours after the incident.
