Man gets year in statues theft
The 23-year-old man who stole two bronze statues from Opportunity Village and sold them for scrap metal at far below their value was sentenced this week to a minimum of a year in state prison.
John Wood will spend 12 to 32 months in prison for grand larceny, a charge to which he pleaded guilty in October. He could have received a maximum of five years in prison.
Wood told police he took the statues from Opportunity Village on Aug. 14, not realizing the sentimental value the art had to the people at the charity organization. The statues also had a cash value of about $12,500, according to a Las Vegas police report.
Wood, a transient, cut up and sold the statues to a recycling plant. A receipt obtained by investigators indicates he received $340.75 for them.
