Man suffers burns in house fire, in critical condition

A homeless man is in critical condition after suffering burns in a Tuesday morning house fire near the Stratosphere.

The Las Vegas Fire Department was called about 4 a.m. to a fire at a vacant house in the 100 block of West New York Avenue.

The fire happened outside the one-story wood-framed structure and the interior sustained little damage, according to fire spokesman Tim Szymanski.

The badly burned man was found by firefighters outside the building and was taken to University Medical Center.

Damage to the house was estimated at $5,000.

Neighbors told fire crews the house had been vacant for some time and homeless people often stayed there. The victim was living in a tent setup outside.

Firefighters were not able to determine what started the fire and it is under investigation.
