Man surrenders after standoff

A man who shot at police was arrested Monday evening after he began a nearly four-hour standoff by refusing to leave a room at the Barcelona Hotel after committing an armed robbery nearby, according to Las Vegas police.

Police did not release the name of the suspect. He was booked at the Clark County Detention Center on charges of robbery, use of a deadly weapon in committing a crime and other possible charges.

No officers or bystanders were injured in the incident.

Officer Bill Cassell, a spokesman with Las Vegas police, said the incident began about 1:40 p.m. when the suspect allegedly robbed a person near Craig Road and Nellis Boulevard. The victim of the robbery followed the suspect, who had fled on foot, and saw which room the suspect went into at the nearby hotel.

The standoff began about 2 p.m., Cassell said. Nearby Manch and Lowman elementary schools were placed on lockdown until the suspect surrendered about 5:40 p.m., Cassell said.
