Police on Sunday identified the man they allege shot a police officer in the shoulder and fatally shot his girlfriend before turning the gun on himself Saturday.
Homicide Lt. Lew Roberts said the man, Allen Meister, 32, was wanted in Long Beach, Calif., for the murder of a man. He said the 21/2-hour standoff at the northwest valley home was a domestic dispute that went "horribly awry."
Roberts said Meister and his girlfriend are thought to be the parents of an 8-month-old child orphaned by the alleged murder-suicide.
The name of Meister's deceased girlfriend was not released by police.
Police also didn't release the name of the injured officer, who was treated at University Medical Center for injuries not considered life-threatening and released.
Police were called to a home at 9:24 a.m. at 6629 Nevada Classic Circle, near Rainbow Boulevard and Alexander Road.
Police were alerted to the situation by a Long Beach woman who said that her sister was being battered at the home.
When officers arrived, a woman opened the front door and placed the baby on the doorstep.
Police grabbed the child, and as they were walking away Meister fired shots at them from the front door, Roberts said. Meister then grabbed the woman and closed the door behind them, police said.
Meister went upstairs and started firing through a window, police said.
Officers returned fire, prompting a standoff that ended when SWAT officers entered the home about noon.
Inside, they found Meister and his girlfriend dead. Police think Meister shot his girlfriend before shooting himself.
Police said the couple's child, who a neighbor said was a boy, was not harmed and is in the care of Child Protective Services.
