Marine Corps League seeks donations for troops abroad

The Marine Corps League is seeking donations for 1,000 Christmas stockings that its Greater Nevada Detachment will send to local military personnel serving overseas in the nation's global war on terrorism.

Cheryl Gardner, coordinator for the fifth annual Operation Christmas Stocking, said items sought include beef jerky, baby wipes, breakfast bars, peanuts, nonperishable snacks, handheld video games, foot powder, insoles, batteries, hot chocolate mix, Visine, lip balm, Slim Jims and tuna packets.

The items can be dropped off at the Leatherneck Club, 4360 Spring Mountain Road.

The stockings must be sent off by Dec. 1 to reach locations in the war zones by Christmas.

The league is coordinating the operation with other veterans groups and local businesses.

"We will be sending at least 1,000 stockings this year," she wrote in an e-mail.

"We do this to assure our men and women we are thinking of them and praying for their safe return this joyous season," she said.
