Metro identifies officer involved in shooting

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department on Thursday released the name of the officer who shot and critically wounded a woman Monday night.
Officer James Carroll, 27, who joined Metro Feb. 28, 1989, is on administrative leave with pay pending an internal inquiry into the shooting, said Lt. Charles Davidaitis, Metro spokesman.
A supervisor with the department's Police Employees Assistance Program will discuss Carroll's case with a psychologist before deciding whether he can return to work, Davidaitis said.
Metro withheld Carroll's name for more than two days following the shooting, which occurred at 9:30 p.m. Monday. Under department policy, the names of officers involved in shootings are not released for 48 hours.
Meanwhile, police are still trying to identify the woman, who remains in critical condition at University Medical Center. A medical center spokeswoman said the woman, suffering from a gunshot wound in the upper torso, has been unconscious since arriving at the hospital Monday night.
Davidaitis said police on Thursday had several names they were checking outside Nevada. On Tuesday, police took the woman's fingerprints as she lay in the hospital and placed them in a national computer network in an effort to identify her.
The woman was shot by Carroll outside the Out of State Check Cashing service at 511 Fremont St. Monday night after police said she deliberately drove her car toward the uniformed officer and knocked him down.
Carroll and another Metro officer were interviewing two people suspected of writing bad checks inside the business when the woman entered, attempted to cash a check and then ran outside as the manager told police she had tried to pass a stolen check.
The woman got behind the wheel of her car and started to drive away when Carroll confronted her and asked her to stop, police said. He fired one shot after the car hit him, police said.
The patrolman suffered hip and leg injuries and was treated and released from the medical center.
