Las Vegas furniture store creates Help for Heroes program

Walker Furniture has launched a Help for Heroes program to help local wounded warriors and veterans with special needs live more comfortable lives.

It plans to provide 10 vets and families with items such as lift chairs, adjustable beds, new mattresses and dining sets.

The business will rely on letters from the community to recommend prospective recipients.

Letters can be dropped off or mailed to the store, 301 S. Martin Luther King Blvd., NV 89106; faxed to 702-384-7772; or emailed to cnelson@walkerfurniture.com. Letters can also be submitted online at www.walkerhelpforheroes.com.

The letters must be received by June 27 to be reviewed for the campaign that runs through July 1.

“We must remember what these men and women have done for us,” company CEO Larry Alterwitz said in a news release Wednesday.

“The VA helps them, but is limited in what they can do beyond their medical needs,” he said.

Help for Heroes letters received by the company will be reviewed and evaluated by an independent panel headed by American Legion Paradise Post 149 Commander John Rupe.

As part of the effort, Walker Furniture is also asking local residents to drop off non-perishable food items and toiletries at the company’s main showroom or the Walker Warehouse/Outlet, 4150 E. Cheyenne Ave.

All donated items will go to the food pantry at American Legion Paradise Post 149.
