Miller refuses bid for only mail-in ballots
Nevada Secretary of State Ross Miller is refusing to allow rural precincts to hold a special election for a vacant U.S. House seat by mail only.
Miller announced Thursday that he had denied requests from Esmeralda and Nye counties to allow some precincts to hold a mail-only Sept. 13 special election.
Both counties said they would save money by allowing voters to cast mail-in ballots only.
But Miller said he is worried about any unknown challenges that could develop if voters' options were limited.
Republican Mark Amodei and Democrat Kate Marshall are vying for the House seat recently vacated by Republican Dean Heller. Heller was appointed to the U.S. Senate to replace Republican Sen. John Ensign.
Others in the race are Tim Fasano of the Independent American Party and Helmuth Lehmann, an independent.
