More candidates file for offices

Candidates filed Friday in Las Vegas to run for mayor and a City Council seat.

Larry Jeppesen, a retired teacher, joined the increasingly crowded race to succeed Mayor Oscar Goodman, who cannot run again because of term limits.

"What I'm going to focus on first of all is the Fire Department," Jeppesen said, because of overtime-boosted salaries that sometimes reach into six figures. "The person who drives the ambulance for the Fire Department makes more money than the doctor who cares for the fellow who's been injured."

"Everybody's mad," he added, and not just at the firefighters. "They're mad at the people who let them do this, and that's the current council. "

In the Ward 1 City Council race, incumbent Lois Tarkanian has a challenger in Margarita Rebollal. She could not be reached for comment Friday.

Tony Liker, an attorney who previously has sought judicial slots, registered for the Ward 3 City Council race.

"The main thing is, we've got to get jobs back here in Vegas," he said.

A sports arena is a "no brainer" way to do that, he said, suggesting the city use land that's now the Desert Pines Golf Course at Bonanza and Pecos roads.

There were no filings Friday in Henderson or North Las Vegas.

Filing for municipal elections continues until Feb. 3 in Henderson and Feb. 4 in Las Vegas and North Las Vegas.
