Movies in my pocket
I read this morning of a new application for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad that improves the Netflix on-demand movie experience. So, I pointed my iPhone 4 to the App Store and downloaded the Netflix app.
After logging in with my Netflix user name and password, and after poking around the app for a while, I decided to see what the on-demand feed of a movie on my phone would look like. I clicked into “The Big Lebowski,” a 1998 movie starring Jeff Bridges. The total elapsed time from the moment I started downloading the application was less than three minutes. Probably more like two minutes.
I'm already a mobile movie-watcher, downloading flicks to my iPods or slipping a disc into my laptop, but I hadn't watched an on-demand flick this way. I was impressed. The feed was smooth, the image on the iPhone 4 screen was crisp and clear and the sound was, well, the sound of speakers on a mobile phone. Next time I plan to plug in my headset.
I had to stop the film a couple of times, and the Netfilx app let me resume the movie where I stopped it, just as I’d be able to if I were watching Netflix on my computer.
Sure, I prefer to watch films in the theater or on my big-screen, surround-sound-equipped home theater, but I liked the small, 3.5-inch screen.
The Netflix folks are really starting to live up to their name, delivering movies through the Internet. I just wonder how much longer they'll be mailing digital video discs to customers.
