Murder charges filed in girl’s death
The man facing child endangerment charges after his 6-year-old daughter was accidentally shot and killed on New Year's Eve is now facing murder charges.
Prosecutors on Wednesday said they are charging Jevell Jackson, 37, with second-degree murder in the death of his daughter, Jorden Jackson.
She was shot and killed by her 7-year-old brother at the family's home near Warm Springs Road and Rainbow Boulevard, according to Las Vegas police.
The girl's brother told police he found the handgun on an upper shelf in a bedroom closet while looking for stuffed animals.
The boy thought the gun was a BB gun and said he accidentally shot his sister, police said.
"At the end of the day, this was a tragic accident," said Chief Deputy Public Defender Curtis Brown, whose office is representing Jackson.
Prosecutors on Wednesday asked that Jackson's bail be set at $100,000 but a Las Vegas justice of the peace set it at $15,000. Jackson was out of custody.
Jackson was earlier facing charges of an ex-felon in possession of a firearm, two counts of child endangerment and felony child endangerment with substantial bodily harm in connection with the death.
His criminal history includes a 1997 drug possession for sale charge and another ex-felon in possession of a firearm charge from five years earlier.
