National group honors justice with Indigent Defense Award

CARSON CITY -- Nevada Supreme Court Justice Michael Cherry is being honored by a national group for his efforts to ensure the rights of criminal defendants who cannot afford to hire their own attorney.

The Washington D.C.-based National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers named Cherry the 2011 winner of its Champion of Indigent Defense Award.

Cherry is a former public defender who chairs the Nevada Supreme Court's Indigent Defense Commission.
