Poison the Well has brain, brawn

To some metalcore purists, Poison the Well are as pestilent as their name implies: Spiking their brusque thrash with dashes of melody and acrobatic time signatures, the band has alienated some with its progressive take on the subgenre.

But for the adventurous, this bunch remains one of the most ambitious and compelling acts amongst the underground metal hordes, balancing brain and brawn while still packing all the punch of a sledgehammer to the kneecaps.

See the group at 6 p.m. at the University Theatre, 4737 S. Maryland Parkway. Tickets are $15; call 898-5500.
