Sum 41, The Go ready to rock

They've gone from snot-nosed punks fond of double entendres and bodily fluids to socially-aware rockers prone to flaunting their early love of Metallica: the dudes in Sum 41 have grown up, but haven't gotten old. The band's latest disc, "Underclass Hero," sees them continue to develop into a band with something more to say than a few well-timed fart jokes. See the band at 6:45 p.m. today at the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay, 3950 Las Vegas Blvd. South. Tickets are $22; call 632-7600.

As its auto manufacturing base began to wane in the early part of the decade, Detroit's other signature industry -- raucous, dirt-beneath-the-fingernails rock 'n' roll -- underwent something of a boom. Led by bands like the Dirtbombs, the White Stripes, the Von Bondies, the Wild Bunch (who morphed into the Electric Six) and the Detroit Cobras, the Motor City's engine ran hot again. And one of the bands most central to the surge was The Go, a leather-clad troupe of throwback rockers that once included Jack White in its ranks. With guitars that growl like a 454 big block, these dudes are ensuring that Detroit Rock City continues to live up to its name. See the band on Thursday at 10 p.m. at the Divebar, 3035 E. Tropicana Ave. Call 579-4707.
