Clutch rocks at

Jillian's Monday

Is there such a thing as a contemporary classic rock band?

Perhaps Maryland steamroller Clutch comes the closest. Though the group started out as a steel-toed hard-core troupe, they've evolved over the last decade into a hard swinging, blues-abetted knuckle sandwich that positively detonates on stage.

The band's latest, "From Beale Street To Oblivion," is one of the best straight-up rock records of the year, a buffet of barrel-chested riffs and hellfire harmonica that makes Mountain seem closer to an ant hill.

See the band at 7 p.m. Monday at Jillian's, 450 Fremont St. Tickets are $18 in advance, $21 day of show; call 759-0450.
