Take musical trip to Hawaii today

His father was a paniolo (a Hawaiian cowboy) and a ki ho'alu (a slack-key guitar player) and by the time he was 8 years old, Gary Haleamau was following suit.

With his distinctive falsetto singing, a voice that floats in the air and fleet-fingered guitar playing, Haleamau's music is as sublime as a sunset.

They call Las Vegas "The Ninth Island" because of the large Polynesian population that has migrated here from Hawaii, and for almost 10 years now, Haleamau has been providing its soundtrack.

See him at 2 p.m. today at the Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive. Call 455-7340 for more information.
