Hear new sound of modern metal

Like a blend of sugar and arsenic, an increasing number of contemporary metal bands are tempering thrash riffs with a radio-ready tunefulness.

Metalcore favorites Atreyu spike massive breakdowns with soaring, cleanly sung choruses and the occasional Bon Jovi cover; fast-rising longhairs Trivium blend melodic, Iron Maiden-esque guitar acrobatics with catchy refrains; and newcomers Droid buffer their bruising grunt with touches of harmony.

Hey, modern metal doesn't have to sound like a water buffalo giving birth all the time.

See them all at 6:45 p.m. on Monday at the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay, 3950 Las Vegas Blvd. South. Tickets are $32; call 632-7600.
