Deftones play at the Palms

Equally breathy and brash, the Deftones have long been fond of counterpoising meditative, starry-eyed melodies with jarring bursts of dissonance suggestive of a couple of tectonic plates crashing into one another.

The band's latest disc, "Saturday Night Wrist," is both spectral and severe, reminiscent of a punk Pink Floyd at times in terms of terse, foreboding atmosphere, but they mostly occupy an astral plane all their own.

See the band at 8 p.m. at The Pearl at the Palms, 4321 W. Flamingo Road. Tickets are $30.50; call 942-7777.
