Nevada Supreme Court has new chief justice
The Nevada Supreme Court has a new chief justice.
Justice Michael Cherry on Monday assumed the administrative post from Justice Nancy Saitta.
Saitta held the position since last September, and Cherry is expected to hold it until January 2013.
The chief justice handles public and administrative duties, and presides when all seven court members hear arguments.
He or she generally doesn't serve on three-member judicial panels that handle many of the state's appellate cases.
Cherry was elected to the Supreme Court in 2006 after eight years as a Clark County District Court judge in Las Vegas.
He started his legal career as a deputy Clark County public defender in 1970 and practiced in private firms before he was elected to the bench.
