Nevada’s 150th anniversary ingot – 1,000 ounces of silver – on display in capital
CARSON CITY — A 1,000-ounce silver ingot that is part of Nevada’s 150th anniversary celebration is now on display at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City.
The silver bar donated by Coeur Rochester will be made into medallions commemorating the state’s sesquicentennial that runs from the October through Nevada Day in 2014.
Each medallion will contain 1 ounce of silver. The Northwest Territory Mint in Dayton will melt the ingot to produce the medallions, which will then be stamped using the historic Coin Press No. 1 at the museum. It’s the original press used at the Carson City Mint back in the 1800s.
The ingot is 1 foot long, 6 inches deep and weighs 60 pounds. It comes from 4,000 tons of ore mined at Coeur Rochester’s mine near Lovelock.
