New BLM visitor center to open near Gerlach

GERLACH -- A visitor center soon will open in Nevada for a national conservation area commemorating the covered-wagon pioneers who trekked to California.

U.S. Bureau of Land Management officials say the new Black Rock Station, set to open July 15 near Gerlach, 110 miles north of Reno, will serve visitors to Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area.

The area features the Applegate and Lassen trails, which were followed by pioneers on their way to California's gold fields in the 19th century.

The facility staffed by BLM personnel will be open seasonally through November.
