New chief chosen for Las Vegas Fire Department

The city has chosen a new chief for the Las Vegas Fire Department and City Council is expected to ratify his appointment in July.

William McDonald was chosen from a search pool of more than 60 local, internal and national candidates.

He will replace former Clark County Fire Chief Steven Smith, who has been serving as an interim leader since April.

“After a thorough search, I am happy to select Chief McDonald,” Las Vegas City Manager Betsy Fretwell said.

McDonald has been a fire chief in Arizona and California since 1993, and was a firefighter for more than a decade. Most recently, he was the fire chief in San Jose, Calif., for 2.5 years.
