New life jackets offered for old in Elko County reservoir

ELKO - Have an old or tattered life jacket? The Nevada Department of Wildlife wants you to trade it in.

NDOW will be offering free life jackets from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at South Fork Reservoir in Elko County. The agency is using funds donated by Barrick Gold Corp. to provide $5,000 worth of free life vests.

To receive a new life jacket, the wildlife agency is asking boaters to bring in a used one to trade.

Officials say a lot of people don't wear the protective gear while boating because the jacket doesn't fit properly or isn't comfortable.

The goal of the program is to convince boaters they can stay safe and be comfortable, too.

New jackets will be available in all sizes, from infant to adult.
