Asphalt application gets cold cancellation

Several readers, frustrated with all the road work they have endured, wonder why streets and highways remain rough after the project looks completed and the equipment is put away. Well, you are going to see more repaving work in the next few months and to explain why, let's lead off today with Edward's question:

What's up with the newly constructed Pecos Road south of the Las Vegas Beltway. Southbound there is a large bump near the Beltway and another bigger one just before Coronado Center. The new pavement is lower than the existing. It took them forever to do the original work, and it appears that it's still not done. It looks like they need to put another layer of pavement. Will they ever complete it?

By the time the newspaper lands on your doorstep, Edward, crews will have started applying the final layer of asphalt on St. Rose Parkway, which is what Pecos turns into south of the Las Vegas Beltway. The work will extend to Coronado Center. The paving will continue for the next three weeks; work hours are from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

According to the Nevada Department of Transportation, temperatures must be in the 70s and rising before the final layer of asphalt is applied to roadways. Temperatures have met that criteria during the day, but to close lanes and work during daytime hours would be disastrous for commuters. Night time temperatures are finally high enough to begin the paving job.

The course, bumpy pavement should be as good as new by the end of the month.

Another question from Edward regarding St. Rose: Also, southbound, at Paseo Verde, the two left-turn arrows are both directly over the inner through lanes. Many times I have seen people in the through lane stopping for these red lights because they think they're for their lane. This is a dangerous situation. They should put up a post in the island with the left turn lights over the correct lanes.

When plans were made to widen St. Rose, the light was missed. While the Transportation Department doesn't consider the intersection dangerous -- and representatives probably wouldn't say that because of liability concerns -- it recognizes the problem.

The state agency is working with the city of Henderson on a plan to remedy the problem. The mast arm is too short to simply move the lights so a new one probably will have to be installed.

This from Lee: There is so much construction on Interstate 15 at the Las Vegas Beltway. Do you know everything they are doing? It looks as though they are building Sunset Road to go over I-15; are they also making an exit off I-15 for Sunset? Are they putting more access to the Town Square Mall as part of the construction?

This is a Nevada Department of Transportation endeavor dubbed the Interstate 15 Design-Build South project. The highlights of the project are the widening of the Warm Springs Road bridge over I-15, the reconstruction of the Blue Diamond Road interchange and the widening of lanes leaving I-15 and feeding into the Beltway.

That's what you're seeing Lee. As for Sunset, yes, the road is being extended over the freeway, but there will not be an exit from I-15 to Sunset. Warm Springs will still be the best bet as far as an east-west thoroughfare over the interstate.

There also will not be better access to Town Square as part of this project. Clark County, however, is adding a left-turn lane onto Las Vegas Boulevard toward Town Square from the Interstate 15 exit ramp.

Daniel is fed up with Cheyenne Avenue: I can't find any information on the project causing lane closures along Cheyenne between Martin Luther King Boulevard and Commerce Street. Can you give me any information about it?

But of course Daniel. This is a $9.7 million repaving project that covers Cheyenne from Highway 95 to Losee Road and between Civic Center Drive and Nellis Boulevard.

The state started repaving that stretch in August and is expected to be finished by the end of the month. Also included in this project are modifications to medians and signals.
