Officer is grazed by SUV, fires shots

One of the officers involved in a Friday night shooting on the Strip was grazed by a vehicle that was fleeing the officer, Las Vegas police said Saturday.

The officer was with another officer on bicycles about 7:45 p.m. when they noticed a black Lincoln Navigator with California plates playing loud music, according to police.

The officers and the vehicle were heading north on Las Vegas Boulevard in front of the Fashion Show Mall. Police said the vehicle's occupants noticed the officers and abruptly crossed two lanes of traffic to make a left turn at Fashion Show Drive.

The driver disobeyed a red light at that intersection and made a U-turn onto southbound Las Vegas Boulevard, according to police. The officers noticed the behavior and pulled the vehicle over on Las Vegas Boulevard at Spring Mountain Road.

They approached the vehicle, with one officer contacting the driver of the vehicle and the other contacting the passenger.

The officers had a brief conversation with the two people and the officer reached in to try to control the passenger, according to police.

The driver then accelerated the vehicle, driving over the officers' bicycles and fleeing the scene eastbound on Sands Avenue. One officer then fired his weapon four times, striking the vehicle several times, according to police.

The vehicle was pulled over on Sands near Howard Hughes Parkway.

Police have not identified the two men and would not say whether they were arrested.

The names of the officers will be released 48 hours after the incident, in accordance with department policy. They have been placed on routine paid administrative leave.
