Officer shoots man who pulled toy gun

A North Las Vegas police officer shot and wounded a man who pulled a toy gun from his coat pocket after being stopped by the officer early Sunday, police said.

Bryan Hamilton was treated and released at University Medical Center before being booked into the North Las Vegas Detention Center on suspicion of misdemeanor assault and obstructing a police officer, police said.

Police said that after interviewing Hamilton, they learned he had planned to commit "suicide by a cop," meaning he wanted to provoke an officer to kill him.

Hamilton, who never fired a shot during Sunday's incident, purchased the realistic BB gun two years ago, police said.

Hamilton was walking along the 5300 block of Clayton Street near Ann Road about 2 a.m. Sunday when he was stopped by the officer.

The officer, whose name was not released, was placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation from the Force Review Board.
