Official accused of embezzling from estates of dead residents

DAYTON -- Lyon County's public administrator, who is responsible for overseeing the estates of deceased residents, has been charged with embezzling money from some estates.

Jason McLean, 35, is alleged to have taken more than $16,000.

A criminal complaint filed in Dayton Justice Court alleged McLean used the money to buy such items as a travel trailer and a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

McLean turned himself in Tuesday, authorities said. Bail was set at $50,000.

McLean was elected county administrator in November 2006.

The position oversees distribution of money and property of a deceased person if an heir does not come forward.
