Oh-oh: Vegas-Anaheim train’s not on the map

President Obama talked about high-speed rail today and released a broad outline for where the $8 billion in dedicated stimulus money, plus $5 billion more, could be spent. The Las Vegas-to-Anaheim train wasn’t on the map.

Nothing has been decided yet, but Obama’s plan mentioned 10 corridors that hold the greatest promise for high-speed rail development. According to a U.S. Department of Transportation map shown here, they are in the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Northwest and . . . California.

The California route would link San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento. One could presume that a Las Vegas line could tie into such a network eventually, but clearly it’s not a top priority of the Department of Transportation.

It’s still early, of course. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and other advocates of the Las Vegas train still have time to make their case. But today’s revelations can’t be considered good news.
