Palo Verde wins D.C. trip in science bowl

Palo Verde High School won the Nevada Regional Science Bowl on Saturday at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and earned a trip to Washington, D.C., in late April for the competition's final.

More than 30 teams from four states competed in the 19th annual event hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Nuclear Security Administration Nevada Site Office.

Teams from California, Arizona, Utah and throughout the Silver State were quizzed on various subjects such as math, physics, astronomy and chemistry.

Darwin Morgan, a National Nuclear Security Administration spokesman, said Palo Verde won $5,000 for its school's math and science programs. It also qualified to compete in the National Science Bowl finals that take place April 29 through May 4.

Teams that finished from second through ninth place earned $100 to $2,500 for their schools. Each team consisted of four students and an alternate member, Morgan said. The other states sent only one school each to the competition.

Douglas County High School in Minden took second place; Green Valley High School's green team finished third; Clark High School took fourth; Centennial High School and Carson High School in Carson City tied for fifth.

Green Valley's blue team and Advanced Technologies Academy tied for seventh. Four teams tied for ninth. They were Clark High School's green team, Bishop Manogue Catholic High School in Reno, Coronado High School and The Meadows School.
