Planning a trip to Hawaii? Maui vacations are a popular choice

When planning a Hawaiian vacation, you're probably going to have to narrow your trip down to visiting just one of the islands. That's because each island has so many activities to keep you occupied, you'll run out of vacation days before experiencing everything you want to see and do.
Maui is one of the more popular island destinations because of its size, exotic scenery, fun villages and communities to explore. Getting there is easy - search for cheap flights to Hawaii, and then book your connecting flights to Maui.
If you plan your trip between September to May, whale sightings are common as humpback whales migrate from Alaska to Hawaii to breed. You can spot whales from shore, or take any popular boat cruise to potentially see them a bit closer.
You may also spot dolphins making spectacular leaps above the ocean surface. The waters around Maui are home to both spinner and bottlenose dolphins, and if you're lucky, you can spot them at any time of the year, especially during the day on the southern edge of the island.
Maui vacations would be incomplete without taking in a luau. Your hotel might offer this delightful pig roast with tables heavily loaded with sweet pineapple and delicious coconut concoctions, but if you are interested in an authentic Hawaiian celebration, check out the Old Lahaina Luau in Lahaina. You'll not only be able to enjoy the traditional foods, but also experience native dancing, songs and island crafts while the sun sets over the ocean in a brilliant display of colors.
The best way to see the scenery Maui has to offer is to rent a vehicle and drive. The Road to Hana is extremely popular, taking visitors along a long, winding drive overlooking the ocean. You'll see plenty of beaches, towering trees in the forests and charming plantation towns. Another must is the drive up to the top of Haleakala. If you go in the morning though, keep a careful eye out for bicyclists following the sunrise all the way down the mountain.
Don't forget to plan a day in your vacation for finding souvenirs and gifts. Maui is an epicenter for shopping, with local handmade craft shops ranging to international brand name stores. The farmers markets are an exciting opportunity to explore beautiful art, jewelry and sculptures. And don't forget to purchase some boxed pineapples so you can extend your enjoyment of Hawaii even after you've returned home. Just make sure your pineapples are appropriately packaged so you can take them through the airport and on the plane.
