Plea deal made in NLV case

A former North Las Vegas police officer is expected to plead guilty later this month to allegations he coerced women into performing sexual acts to get out of traffic tickets.
Authorities allege James Vernon Clayton on multiple occasions would encourage women to flirt or expose themselves to get out of a citation.
Clayton is expected on Sept. 30 in District Court to plead guilty to three counts of attempted misconduct of a police officer and two counts of oppression under color of office, prosecutor Stacy Kollins said.
"This sends a message that we will not tolerate that kind of conduct from those trusted with our protection," Kollins said.
The five counts are gross misdemeanors. Clayton faces a maximum of five years in prison, Kollins said. He could receive probation. Prosecutors have reserved the right to argue at his sentencing.
There were at least five victims, North Las Vegas police said.
One victim alleged that, over the course of a few weeks, Clayton pulled her over twice, ran into her at a mall and went to the strip club where she worked and requested a lap dance from her.
Other victims said he would call, send text messages or show up at home and work. Another victim said Clayton exposed himself to her.
Clayton was a three-year veteran of the department when he was charged in December. He was fired in January.
