POINTS LEADERS DOMINATING
August 11, 2008 - 2:31 pm
Kyle Busch, Tony Schumacher and Scott Dixon aren’t just leading their respective points races ... all are dominating.
Busch won his eighth NASCAR Sprint Cup race Sunday at Watkins Glen, N.Y.
Schumacher won his fourth consecutive Top Fuel title and ninth in 16 races Sunday at Brainerd, Minn., in the NHRA Powerade Drag Racing Series.
And Saturday, Dixon won for the sixth time in 14 IndyCar races and nearly clinched the championship with three races left.
Busch and Schumacher, however, can’t breathe yet. Each of their respective series uses a playoff format to determine season champions; four races remain before the start of NASCAR’s 10-race Chase for the top 12 drivers after 26 races, and two are left before the NHRA’s six-event Countdown begins.
The IndyCar Series uses a traditional championship format, and Dixon could clinch the title at the next race.
How long until the IndyCar group opts for a “What have you done for me lately” postseason format to pick its champion?
And should it?
THOUGHTS WITH THE HART FAMILY
Tony Hart, the 21-year-old younger brother of freestyle motocross legend and reality TV star Carey Hart, died a few hours after a racing crash Saturday in Stafford Springs, Conn.
The Henderson resident was practicing for the XTRM/AMA Supermoto Championship race when he suffered fatal head injuries after crashing on the oval portion of the circuit at Stafford Motor Speedway near Hartford, according to Cycle News.
The Supermoto format combines racing on pavement and includes traditional dirt motocross sections built in the infield.
Hart was competing in the Supermoto Lites class for the Rockstar/Hart & Huntington KTM team owned by his brother.
Tom Hart was with his son at a local hospital when he died. Carey Hart was in Sturgis, S.D., when notified of the accident and reportedly left immediately for Hartford.
The event was sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association, part of the AMA XTRM Supermoto Championship series.
