Police arrest man after shots fired

Las Vegas police shot at a man Sunday after he fired a gun into the air and turned toward officers with the weapon, police said Monday.

The suspect, who was not positively identified by officers, was in the courtyard of 3225 Arlene Way, near Cheyenne Avenue and Michael Way, shooting a gun into the air when officers arrived, police said.

When officers exited their vehicle to confront the man, he turned toward them with the weapon, police said, at which time an officer fired one shot, missing the suspect.

The suspect was later found hiding in a trash bin at 5400 Cheyenne Ave., where he was arrested and charged with discharging a firearm in a public place.

Police are investigating the incident.

The officer who fired the shot has been placed on routine, paid administrative leave by the department pending completion of the investigation.

His name will be released 48 hours after the incident, according department policy.
