Police checking into whether rape suspect had other victims
Las Vegas police are trying to determine whether a man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a child under the age of 14 in December had other victims.
Las Vegas police arrested Edward Adams, 25, on Jan. 12. He is accused of kidnapping and raping a girl coming home from middle school Dec. 14.
A police report said Adams approached the girl as she was walking home on Alta Drive east of Buffalo Drive about 4:30 p.m., grabbing her hand and telling her, "don't scream, don't run; I have a gun."
The police report said Adams and the girl walked about 20 minutes to apartments east of Cimarron Road on the south side of Charleston Boulevard. There, Adams led the girl to an apartment, where he walked in without a key. The apartment appeared empty except for a couch and candles, the victim told police. Adams forced the girl on the floor, lit the candles and sexually assaulted her, the police report said.
Police Lt. John Bradshaw said police weren't sure whether Adams had other victims. "A lot of sexual assaults are unreported," Bradshaw said. "If there's one, it's hard to think this was his first time."
Police located the apartment where the victim said the rape occurred and found Adams' fingerprints inside, their report said. A property manager told police the apartment was uninhabited because of a recent fire.
The victim identified Adams in a photo lineup Jan. 11. Adams was arrested the next day and asked to undergo a DNA test, the report said.
Adams remained Tuesday in the Clark County Detention Center, facing charges of kidnapping, sexual assault with a victim under 14, battery with intent to commit sexual assault and open and gross lewdness. Bail was set at $140,000; his preliminary hearing in Justice Court is Jan. 30.
Anyone with any information about him is urged to call Las Vegas police at 385-5555.
