Police officer taken off duty during probe

A Las Vegas police officer was relieved of duty with pay pending the outcome of a criminal and internal investigation into allegations he engaged in lewdness with a child under 14.

Damian Amalfitano, 32, was relieved of duty Aug. 11, the same day the Police Department learned about the allegations, said Assistant Sheriff Mike McClary.

Amalfitano entered the Metropolitan Police Department's academy in Sept. 2000. He was a patrol officer for the southwest area command when the investigation was opened.

Amalfitano was not on duty at the time of the alleged incident, McClary said.

Police did not release any further details.
