Three Las Vegas police officers involved in a Thursday shooting that happened during a domestic violence call were identified Monday.
Sgt. James Carroll, officer Coleman Oswald and officer Stephen Ayres shot and critically injured 27-year-old Jason Vanbuskirk after his ex-girlfriend called 911 and reported he was outside her home with a gun.
Carroll, 47, has been with the police department since 1989. Oswald, 23, has been with the department since 2009, and Ayres, 39, has been with the department since 1998.
All three officers, who are assigned to Northwest Area Command, are on routine paid administrative leave pending an investigation.
According to his arrest report, Vanbuskirk was shot after trying to ambush officers about 10 p.m. outside 3908 Applecrest St., near Alexander Road and Rancho Drive. Police said he fired several shots from a .40-caliber handgun at the officers while hiding behind a black pickup in front of the home.
Before police arrived, he also fired shots at a man riding a moped down the street, the report said.
His ex-girlfriend told police Vanbuskirk pointed a gun at a man visiting her home before she called police.
Neither the man nor the officers were injured.
Vanbuskirk, who is being treated for a gunshot wound to the chest at University Medical Center, was booked in absentia at the Clark County Detention Center on three counts of attempted murder on a police officer and one count of attempted murder with a deadly weapon. His condition was unknown Monday.
