Police report describes slaying, arrest

The scene Wednesday morning at the ranch-style home on Valparaiso Street was one of anger, bloodshed and chaos.

Inside a bedroom was the lifeless body of Griselda Flores-Sanchez, 42, shot in the head by her husband who suspected she was cheating on him, Flores-Sanchez's brother told police, according to an arrest report released Thursday.

When Las Vegas police searched the home after receiving a call about gunshots from Flores-Sanchez's brother shortly before 11 a.m., they found four children in the kitchen sitting in high chairs.

They also found Flores-Sanchez's 10-year-old son, who told police he saw his stepfather, Jose Gueta-Castaneda, 48, shoot his mother shortly after she begged him not to shoot her boys. Gueta-Castaneda then left the home, the report said, and the boy locked the door and called 911.

Police caught up to Gueta-Castaneda minutes after the shooting. He was standing at a park about a block away from his home, near Smoke Ranch Road and Torrey Pines Drive.

A resigned Gueta-Castaneda admitted to police what he had done.

"I just shot my wife," the report quoted him as telling an officer.

Police also found a handgun on the floor of Gueta-Castaneda's Ford Expedition, parked near the park.

Police allege Gueta-Castaneda also shot at his wife's brother, Pedro Flores, as Gueta-Castaneda was fleeing from the home.

Flores originally called police after hearing gunshots inside the home and because he was concerned Gueta-Castaneda was going to kill his sister and the man he suspected she was cheating on him with, the report said.

Flores then went to the home to check on her welfare, the report said.

Christine Skorupski, a spokeswoman with Clark County Family Services, said Wednesday that four children at the home were taken into protective custody by her agency.

Skorupski said she could not comment on whether her agency had any previous history at the residence, because the slaying did not involve a child fatality.

Gueta-Castaneda is being held at the Clark County Detention Center without bail on charges of murder with a deadly weapon and attempted murder with a deadly weapon.

He has a court appearance scheduled for this morning.
