Police search for suspect who shot Elko County deputy during shootout

Authorities were on the hunt for a man suspected of shooting an Elko County sheriff's deputy Thursday night.

Peter Mark Coca stood on the roof of a home in Wells, in the northeast corner of the state, and fired between 50 and 60 rounds from a rifle at deputies who were responding to a domestic dispute, the Elko County Sheriff's Office said.

As deputies exchanged gunfire with the man, deputy Lenwood VanNatter was hit by multiple rounds in the chest, hip and legs. He was pulled from the scene and flown to the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City. He underwent surgery and was listed in critical condition, according to a news release.

Coca fired several more rounds at authorities and escaped. He might be traveling in a dark-colored 1998 Ford pickup bearing Nevada license plate 050MJY.

Authorities consider Coca armed and dangerous.
